Episode Summary
"Gone" / Season 2, Episode 9
Broadcast:
December 6, 2005
Rebroadcast: April 4, 2006
A story of paint ball, Mannix, a cat, giving the finger and 37 mil living
below the poverty line.
While Denise Bauer shops with her housekeeper and
the woman's four-year-old son, the unthinkable happens when the boy is
kidnapped by a known pedophile. An FBI special agent tells them that
technicalities prevent the Bureau from getting involved, but he strongly
suggests that, as private citizens, Denise and Brad Chase conduct their
own investigation. Their frantic search eventually takes them to Father
Ryan (Richard Fancy), a priest who refuses to help since he can't break
his confessional seal. Meanwhile, a homeless man throws a rock at Denny
Crane for not acknowledging his request for money and Denny shoots him -
with a paintball gun. When the man shows up at Crane, Poole & Schmidt for
compensation, Denny adamantly refuses to consider his request, but Alan
Shore takes the man's case, pitting the friends against each other.
* New Orleans storyline apparently edited out.

Episode Dialogue
One of Brad's friends: You're not gonna go all Mannix on us, are you?
Brad: I never did that. I'll meet you downstairs.
Denise: What did he mean, 'go all Mannix'?
Brad: When I was a kid, my role model was sort of...Mannix. The famous
private detective?
Denise: The television character?
__
Brad: Bad answer! You're going to help me get this child back or arms are gonna get
broken, ligaments severed. Electrical devices might even get attached to
testicles, and I don't mean mine.
__
Denny: Jane Fonda and I used to... you know. Then she turned on me. They
caught her in one of those communist bitch hunts.
__
Denise and Brad walk into the church and Denise warns: "Remember. All
bark. No biting." * Brad crosses himself*
__
Denise: Give me the finger!
__
Lewiston, watching Denny on Larry King: Our Father, who art in Heaven...
Alan Shore: Get up, Denny. We’re going to the bathroom.
Denny Crane: Untie the knot. *He turns over*
Alan Shore: It takes too long. Just get up!
Denny Crane: I’m not…
Alan Shore: Get up! It’ll take two seconds. *He tugs on the rope*
Alan tugs violently at the rope. Denny is pulled out of bed on to the
floor.
Alan Shore: Happy?
Denny tugs on the rope, causing Alan to fall on top of him. They are face
to face.
Denny Crane: This isn’t working for me.
Did You Know... ?
Kirk
Yes, another Star Trek reference: The name of the homeless gentleman was
Randall KIRK. For more parallels between "Gone" and Star Trek, including
the haves v. the have nots, visit our
Trek in the Courtroom page.
Disappearing Storyline #18:
Early show summaries referenced the following s/l with regard to Randall
Kirk, the homeless guy:
"Instead of suing, he wants them to represent him in suing the government
for letting his wife die after the hurricane in New Orleans."
Whether they cut it for more Brad Time or there was a network note saying
the JUST finished recovering from the "Witches of Mass Destruction"
onslaught about the US prescense in Iraq, the very real, very emotional
indictment about the handling of Hurricane Katrina was, shall we say,
axed.
Cat + Fingers / other shows = guaranteed laughs
There's a great scene in Keen Eddie [Keeping Up Appearances] that I have a
feeling influenced the fingers/cat scene, where Mark Valley's [Brad]
character Eddie Arlette sets a friends tooth on the kitchen counter. His
roommate Fiona accidentally manages to knock it to the floor whereby her cat scampers after it
and swallows it. The room quickly clears as Fiona freaks out.
Someone also noted that this same animal/appendage theft took place in
"Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang".
